Do you own an HP
DV1000,DV2000,DV3000,DV6000,or DV9000 Laptop?
What's Going On?
HP has acknowledged the fact that there are some serious problems
with these laptops. They have extended the warranties although
most of them experience failure shortly after the extended
warranty expires. HP will charge between $250 to $500 to repair
these laptops depending on the model. There were a lot of them
sold on Maui through Costco. We see several of them every week
with the same problems. The symptoms vary but the result is the
same. They won't turn on and if they do it's only for a short
time before they shut off by themselves. Be aware that your model
number might not be exactly DV1000 or DV9000. There are hundreds
of variations such as DV9723CL. But if it starts with DV1,2,3,6
,or 9, you are a victim of this unfortunate problem.
What Is The Cause Of The
Problem?
HP failed to provide adequate cooling measures for an already
known HOT CPU and GPU. The CPU was provided by AMD and the
GPU was provided by Nvidia. (Not every model was made with
these. Call us and we'll help you look it up on your
computer so you know for sure) You will generally see these brand
stickers somewhere on the system. These two companies have been
known in the industry for years as being more unstable and higher
heat producers than the leading manufacturer, Intel. HP chose to
build millions of low grade consumer laptops with these heat
producing chips. Had they taken measures to reduce the heat more
efficiently, they wouldn't be in the position they are in now.
How Can I Avoid This Failure
In The First Place?
The biggest problem with these laptops is airflow. To cool
the CPU & GPU there is a fan pulling air in from the bottom of
the laptop to cool the heatsink that draws heat away from
these two chips. It then exhausts the hot air out the back or
side of the laptop. THESE INTAKE AND EXHAUST AREAS MUST BE
KEPT CLEAR. Most people simply set their laptop down wherever
it's convenient. They don't realize that they are usually
blocking the air passages causing the laptop to get very hot.
Heat cycles are what kills these computers. Getting very hot and
then cooling off over and over causes stresses and micro-fractures
that eventually lead to shorting and system failure. The least
you can do is keep the bottom of the laptop elevated from the
table or desktop surface by placing a block of some sort underneath
it. This allows air to flow freely under the system. The best
thing you can do is purchase a laptop cooler. We stock them for
this very reason so call us first. They are specially designed to
fit under the laptop without elevating it too much, And they have
additional cooling fans to help circulate cooler air to the
laptop. These units run anywhere from $30 to $150.
What If I'm Experiencing The
Problem Now?
Don't fret. It can be repaired. Most importantly this
problem almost never affects your data. We can easily move it to
a new system. If your system is out of warranty and
experiencing these problems, give us a call. We have the
knowledge and experience to repair any laptop. We are successful
in repairing about 85% of these failed HP systems. If we can't
fix it, you don't pay a dime. If you're one of those few we can advise you where to
spend your hard earned cash next. Don't get burned by HP or any
other manufacturer again. Consult with someone who knows about
these things. Just talk to us first. We'll advise you on what to
buy or sell you one from our inventory. Although HP does make
some quality equipment you need to know exactly what you're
buying.
